The IPA

The IPA, or International Phonetic Alphabet, has attemped to give all unique sounds in spoken language a unique symbol. I have chosen to use it to help differentiate between, for example, the three different "uh" sounds we have: butter [], pull [], and supply []. IPA symbols will appear in brackets: [ ].

Wikipedia has a good collection of information on the IPA, which includes a page for each individual sound. It also has a general page that focuses on English phonology.

The Cambridge Dictionary Online is a great resource because it give the IPA for all of its words. When you are on the page for a word's definition, such as sigh, there is a link underneath the word "show phonetics." Once you have clicked that once, every word you look up in that session will automatically display the IPA.

Also, Dictionary.com has a link next to the word of every definition, 'Show IPA Pronunciation.' With all these sources on the net, you have access to precise pronunciation information for every word in English!

Please note that different sources will at times give different IPA translations of a word. This is could be due to slight regional variations in pronunciation, but also just differences in opinion on the best way to represent a sound.
