Joke vs. Shuck

Someone posted to one of my videos on YouTube that he wante to know how to pronounce joke vs. shuck.

I will out line that below, but also want to point out for everyone's beneift the services of dictionary.com and the Cambridge Dictionary, so that you might feel comfortable working through the how-to on your own.  Both of these websites give the IPA transcriptions of all their words. For example, you could look up joke and shuck and see that they are spelled:

[] and [], respectively.

That is, the 'jj' as in 'jar', the 'oh' as in 'no', the 'k' as in 'cap' for the word joke, and for the word shuck, the 'sh' as in 'ship', the 'uh' as in 'butter', and the 'k' as in 'cap'.

You can then go the sounds page, and look up each sound video by its IPA symbol. If you ever want more videos that include a particular sound, you can click on in the bottom bar of the page.

A word on this word pair comparison: There are two differences. The first, as you can see from the IPA symbols, is the beginning sound. The mouth forms these sounds differently, and jj is voice and sh is not. The second is the middle sound - one is a diphthong and one a plane vowel. It is important to make sure both sounds of the diphthong are being pronounced.
